52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 10 - This Week’s Theme is “Translation”

This week’s theme is an interesting one. I only know two of my immigrant ancestors and that would be Johanna Louisa Beyer Blum Ratcliff. Johanna came to this country from Germany with her father. I don’t know a lot about her except that she was married, widowed with a young daughter, and then married my 2nd great grandfather, Silas Ratcliff. The other family is our Euler family. This family is somewhat of a mystery, however, when my mother and I were in Salt Lake City in 2016, she found some baptismal records written in the original German church records. These were translated with the help of one of the Library volunteers. I’ve been lucky so far in that I haven’t had to translate/read/decipher a different language, but trying to read the old handwriting is almost as hard. Practice makes perfect so I will continue working in the old records.

Until Next Time!

Happy Hunting!
